Uploading Quality Profile Pictures on Second Life by Aimy Rayna
Let it be said, not all picture sizes are equal when it comes to posting Profile, Classified, or Pick Pictures on Second Life. While it's easiest to take a snapshot inworld and upload it directly to second life for $10L, you will probably be disappointed with the results. The image may look stretched out of proportion or squashed. I suggest you save your snapshots to your hard drive for free and set the images in the correct proportions before uploading them to Second Life.
In their Knowledge Base, Second Life covers the topic of image sizes by referencing the ratio rates. For instance, they say to use the ratio 4:3 for Second Life Profile Picks, but what does that mean ?
This tutorial doesn't go into detail on how to edit the photos in an editing program such as Photoshop or Gimp. There are many tutorials for that online.
Keep in mind, it's best to keep all image sizes under 512 pixels to keep the file size down. I've listed the possible sizes for each ratio by pixels under each category.

The Formula for figuring out ratios on your own.
EXAMPLE:
10:7 Ratio (read 10 to 7)
10 is the width ratio
7 is the height ratio
SETTING THE WIDTH
Set the number of pixels to be evenly divisible by the ratio number (10 in this case).
512 is not evenly divisible by 10. It has a remainder of 2, so we'll round down to 500 pixels
500 divided by 10 = 50
SETTING THE HEIGHT
To get the height of the image multiply the answer (50) by the number of the height ratio (7)
50 x 7 = 350
So this image would fit perfectly in our Classified Ad at 500 pixels by 350 pixels.
